My Bio

I’m an award-winning fact-checker, editor, and writer who translates science and other tricky subjects for books, articles, and podcasts. I’ve fact-checked dozens of articles for clients including National Geographic and The Atlantic, dozens of Radiolab episodes, and 25 books and counting, covering mostly science but also social justice and work culture. I’ve authored more than a dozen books for National Geographic Kids, including the award-winning Myths Busted! series, and I spent years editing Science News for Students.

I recognize and honor the vulnerability in publishing, especially while acting as a fact-checker. In that role, I’m often one of only a few people to see another person’s unfinished body of work. I respond to that trust with kindness and clarity, and support you as a team member. Fact-checking’s role across media is murky and not uniform. I can tell you what goes unsaid and make sense of schedules and together we come up with a sensible plan. “Let’s not destroy ourselves,” I like to say.

I grew up in north Florida, spent a decade in Washington, D.C., then in 2009 moved to Seattle, where I started my own editorial business. Today I live in southwestern Montana with my family that includes kids and bunnies. My favorite fact is that humans are animals.
